Maths

In Maths we are learning about symmetry. We know that both sides of an object must be the same to be symmetrical.
We have made Olympic torches.
We used mirrors to find out which capital letters are symmetrical.
We made butterflies by painting on one side of a piece of paper then folding it in half and pressing on it to transfer the paint to the other side. Next we opened it up to see our symmetrical patterns. When the paint was dry we folded the paper again and cut out a butterfly. Come in to see our butterflies.

On Saturday a number of Room 13 children played sport. This week three were named 'Player of the Day' for their teams. Congratulations to: Paige, William F, and Harrison, who all play rugby. Congratulations to you all.

Thank you to those who had their Student Led Conferences today. I really enjoyed talking to you and I know the children enjoyed sharing their work with you.
In Mathematics we are learning about symmetry. Today we made Olympic torches. We had to make them symmetrical by holding two different pieces of coloured paper together and cutting them out. Then we added some paper details before gluing them onto another piece of paper . Come into our classroom to see them. We think they look fantastic. I am very impressed with everyone's patience and perseverance which enabled us all to complete the torches on one session.

Describing Our Tea

Today we wrote about the meal we ate last night. We had to use adjectives to describe our food. This helped our readers to 'see' our meal in their heads.

Last night I has sizzling bacon and toast with sauce. When the sauce came out it bubbled. The toast was hot and brown with margarine. My toast was crunchy and warm. I had a drink of L & P. Annabel

Last night I had crayfish for dinner. It tasted good. It was super hot. The crayfish was spicy. Ethan

Guess what I had for tea last night? I had cheerios with some tomato sauce. Danny

At dinner time I had some raw carrots, pork, and mashed potatoes. The carrots were orange and crunchy. The pork was soft and cut into tiny pieces. Estelle

Last night I had pasta for tea. The pasta was slippery with meat that was delicious. When I eat pasta I get a tingly feeling in my mouth. Elliott

Term 2 Week 7

What an interesting week this has been - only two days at school! It was great to see you all today and to catch up on what you've been doing in the snow. Good to hear that some of you took advantage of the Numeracy and Literacy website links from this blog.
Today we had a snow theme - we wrote poems, drew snowmen, made snowflakes, and read a poem about a Little White Snowman.
Come in to our room to check out our snowmen and our poems. Here's a few:

Snow, snow, snow
Now, now, now
Only snow, only snow
Wow! Wow! Wow!
      Wil

Snow everywhere
Numb fingers and toes
Our yard is covered in snow
We built a snowman
      Ethan

We made a snowman
It’s nose was a carrot
It’s mouth and eyes were stones
I loved it’s arms because the were sticks
      Estelle

Snow is falling down
Next it is going to freeze
On Wednesday there is no school
When is it going to snow again?
      Ben

Snow Poem

This poem is by Bess. Great description of the snow, Bess. Thanks.

"Snow"

As cold as an ice cream.

As soft as a blanket.

On a cold winter's night, you might see Jack Frost peeking through your
window.

Watch out! He's up to something!

What a surprise for all to see - a winter wonderland! Yippee!

Snow Photo

Here's a photo of Macy and her sister, Lily, having their morning tea outside. You can see the snowflakes falling.
Thanks for sending this photo, Macy. Keep warm!

Snow Day

What a surprise to wake up to snow this morning. There was just a light sprinkling as I drove to school, but it did get heavier and, as you know, the decision was made to close the school. Now as I look out of my lounge window the snow is falling steadily, and there's some big flakes. I wonder how long it will last? I have been for a walk in the snow and thrown a few snowballs, but have yet to make a snowman - maybe after lunch.
If you are wondering what to do today, here's a few ideas:
*Practice reading your play, and maybe make your props if you can.
*Write a poem or story about the snow.
*Take some snow photos and write caption for them.
*Check out the maths sites and time yourself with the Basic Facts.
*Practice your typing - click on 'Dance Mat Typing'.
You could email me your poem or story or photo and I could put it on the blog.
Keep warm, have fun, and be kind to your whanau.
Check this blog and/or the CtK school website in the morning for details re: opening hours.
Take care.

As this is a short week we will have a break from spelling. For reading we will be working on plays. Please help your child to become familiar with their part. They need to be confident reading the words and also know when it is their turn to speak.
