This week we have had fun doing science experiments and finding out how different solids and liquids react when mixed together. Our favourite is oobleck (made from 1 part water to 1.5-2 parts cornflour. Food colouring can be added as well). It is certainly an interesting substance.
Today we used baking soda and vinegar to make volcanoes.

This afternoon two boys were presented with certificates for 100% attendance in Term 3. Congratulations Ethan and Ben.

Thank you for all your support this term, I have greatly appreciated it. I wish you all a safe, happy, and relaxing holiday. I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 15 October.
Remember to read each day, and also have a go on Mathletics and check out the sites on the blog.

Oobleck and other news

Today we made oobleck. We mixed cornflour, water, and food colouring together. This made a strange  substance! When we tried to stir it quickly it was hard to move the spoon and it felt like a solid, but when we moved the spoon slowly it was easy to stir and it felt like a liquid. It was fun to play with too.
We also watched some videos of oobleck. Check this one out:

It's good to celebrate all the Room 13 children do and we've congratulated Players of the Day and dancing successes.
Now we congratulate Annabel as she made her Brownie Promise and was enrolled tonight. Welcome to Brownies, Annabel, I know you will have lots of fun!

Moving Milk

We had fun with milk, food colouring, and detergent.

Term 3 Week 9 'Star of the Week'

This week's Star of the Week is Ciara.
Ka wani ke, Ciara, it's great to have you in Room 13.

We've had a busy week focusing on our topic. As well as painting our shoeboxes we have been working on posters about our animals. We had three questions to answer:
1. How does an animal's habitat help it survive?
2. How does an animal's body protect it from predators?
3. How does an animal get its food?
We worked in groups to gather the information then process it and write our answers. We have now created our posters and they are displayed on our classroom wall. Come in and see them.
You can also check out photos - click on the relevant animal under 'Children's Work' on the right hand side of this blog. Your child will be able to tell you which poster they worked on.

Reading Groups' Work

The Pukeko Reading Group read a poem: Sandy Song. Then they wrote their own Sandy Songs. Here they are:

I see the sea banging on my feet
I feel the sand going between my toes
I hear birds flying in the breeze
I taste salt blowing in my mouth
I smell fish in the sea swimming around
By George

I see an ocean and people building sandcastles
I feel sand between my toes and salt all over me
I hear the ocean crashing and laughter and wind
I taste sand and ice-cream and salty water
I smell salt and sand and sea
By Alexandra

I see people making sandcastles and swimming and smiling
I feel sand between my fingers and toes and salty water all over me
I hear seagulls chirping
I taste salty water, ice-cream and sand in my mouth
I smell salty water, the sand and some trees
By Kate

I see the fish and birds
I feel shells and sand
I hear birds and babies
I taste sand and water
I smell fish and chips
By Luke

The Kakapo Reading Group have been reading 'The Impossible Bridge'. They then designed and made their own bridge. Well done William F, Danny, Ethan, and William T, you worked really well together to create  an amazing bridge.

Our Topic: NZ Animals and their Habitats

We continue on our topic 'NZ Animals and their Habitats'.

Yesterday we wrote about our animal.
Alex wrote this riddle: (find the answer at the bottom of this posting)

A Riddle
I’m a naughty bird
I live in the mountains
I play with things.
What am I?

Today we began the Creating stage of our Inquiry Process. We painted our shoe boxes as the background for our dioramas. We also used the computers to type the answers to our questions before creating either a Keynote show or Comic Life document. A big THANK YOU goes to the Room 5 Year 4 students who helped us with our computer skills. Another big THANK YOU goes to Chris for helping us paint.
Here's some photos:

Riddle answer: I am a kea.

Today we celebrated a number of things:

*Macy was 7 yesterday, so we sang 'Happy Birthday' to her. We hope you enjoy being 7 Macy.

*Our top three Mathletics Stars for Week 8 are: Christian, Liam, and Ethan. We also came 46th class in NZ. Well done to you all.

*The winter sport season is over and clubs have held their prizegivings. Ben and William F both received trophies for being the 'Most improved player' in their respective teams. Ka pai.

Thank you for bringing your shoebox and habitat items. Remember you will need enough twigs/stones/grass etc to create a habitat for your animal or bird. Please put your habitat 'stuff' into a named plastic bag.
